As a terminally ill mother of two young children, born and raised in this community, I cannot leave them behind in a hometown that shuns and rejects them simply because they follow a minority religion.
My children have the right to walk down Kailua road judged only by the goodness of their hearts and the aloha spirit they carry.
So I am standing up and I am saying I am a Vaishnava Hindu, I am a Krishna devotee, I am a disciple of Jagad Guru Siddhaswarupananda (Chris Butler). I live in Kailua. This is my home. This is my community. I will not be bullied. I will not allow the lives of my children to be shrouded by the bigotry of fear mongers.
Standing up for our constitutional right to freedom of religion is possibly the scariest thing I have faced, and being terminally ill, I have faced a lot of fears. Bigots in retaliation will undoubtedly target my family. They may even threaten our lives.
I know firsthand and sincerely believe that the vast majority of our community are true champions of the Aloha spirit. So I ask you to stand with me, a religious minority within our community, and say that this hate and bigotry is not welcome here.
I have spent the past few weeks putting together this website that addresses many of the issues very directly. It is my hope that in taking this first step we can shine light on this issue and there can be a genuine and sincere out pouring of the Aloha spirit that shines above and beyond the ugly voices of hate and fear.
